You can soon control your Spotify playback via Gemini AI.
Google is currently in the works to develop a Spotify extension for its Gemini AI. This could let users control their music and podcast playback with simple voice commands using the new AI assistant.
The feature, found during a recent app teardown, seems to be part of Google’s plan to grow Gemini’s abilities beyond its current YouTube Music integration. Meaning, Spotify users won’t need to switch to YouTube Music anymore to enjoy voice-controlled streaming via Gemini.
Spotify Integration for Gemini
Looking closer at the details, an analysis of the Google app (version 15.30.27.29) has shown code that hints at an upcoming Spotify extension for Gemini.
But it isn’t entirely out of the blue. It builds on earlier leaks from June when code strings mentioning this connection were first found.
What’s interesting about this connection is that it might give Gemini access to our Spotify playlists, listening history, and likes. Data from these conversations could be utilized in future AI features. So, this can help make personalized music recommendations even better in the future.
However, users will need to agree to the connection’s terms, which include sharing some “relevant info” and Gemini talks with Spotify.
How It Works
Early testing of this feature has revealed some interesting mechanics.
Users can ask for songs by using the “@spotify” command followed by a specific song request. Gemini then processes this request, briefly displaying a YouTube Music info card before playing the song through Spotify.
Interestingly, Gemini can play music via Spotify in the background without opening the app. This has been shown to work in tests on a phone, which could make our listening experiences more seamless.
However, it’s still in development, so there are some quirks.
For one, song retrieval may not be instantaneous. You may have to wait a few seconds for Spotify to search and load the song you are looking for. And, as mentioned earlier, it still displays YouTube Music before redirecting to Spotify.
Also, we’re not sure if this feature will be available to all Spotify users or only to Premium subscribers.
We’ll just have to wait and see until this is announced and released.
What Else Can We Expect From Gemini?
The Gemini-Spotify integration is just one piece of a much larger puzzle.
Google is actively developing extensions for other services, including Google Home, the Phone app, and various tools. These additions aim to make Gemini a more comprehensive AI assistant, ready to compete in the fast-changing AI market.
Gemini itself represents a huge leap forward in Google’s AI offerings.
It’s not just another chatbot; it’s a fusion of an AI chatbot, a next-generation assistant, and a powerful language model, all rolled into a single platform.
In essence, it’s like a more advanced version of Google Assistant.
Yet, unlike Google Assistant, it’s not confined to Android devices. Users can also use Gemini on many platforms, including iOS and the web. This multi-platform approach fits with Google’s vision of smoothly integrating AI into users’ daily digital activities.
