Imagine needing to untangle the wires minutes before walking down the aisle
At the London Fashion Week 2024, a unique wedding dress made from old Apple headphone wires was revealed, blending the love for music with eco-friendly design.
Created by Conner Ives, the dress, aptly named “The Headphone Bride“, became a highlight of his Fall 2024 collection. This dress offers a fresh take on wedding attire for those dreaming of an audiophile-themed wedding.
The Headphone Bride
In a standout moment at London Fashion Week, Conner Ives unveiled “The Headphone Bride,” a wedding dress that marries technology, eco-consciousness, and style.
The gown was worn by Ives’s friend, Tish Weinstock, who also wore one of Ives’ wedding dresses at her own wedding.
As Weinstock walked with Björk’s “Headphones” playing in the background, the crowd was initially puzzled by the white, moving decorations on her dress.
But, as she got closer, it became clear that these were actually carefully placed headphone wires.
As it turns out, the gown was made from fine white organza and adorned with hand-embroidered recycled Apple earbud cables. These cables, as Ives claimed, were offcuts from a headphone manufacturer in Kolkata, India.
To tie the whole theme together, Weinstock also carried an iPod Nano owned by Conner’s boyfriend, Max.
In an interview, Tish Weinstock expressed her emotions about being chosen to wear the dress.
The Inspiration Behind the Dress
Conner Ives’s creation of “The Headphone Bride” was inspired by his deep concern for the environment and the modern habit of throwing things away too easily.
In his show notes, he shares that his practice mostly comes from his “discomfort with the concept of waste.” This idea that we can take what is usually thrown out and see it as valuable really shaped his work this season.
Because of this, “The Headphone Bride” showcases Ives’s dedication to making fashion that doesn’t just look good but does good for the environment. By choosing materials that would otherwise end up in the trash, he joins the charge in a fashion movement that values sustainability as the new luxury.
According to Ives, the dress is also a statement about bringing old trends back to life in a new and exciting way. It targets to connect with Gen Zers who love to find new uses for old tech like iPods and wired headphones, turning them into trendy accessories.
Other Ives’s Collection Revealed
The Fall 2024 lineup by Conner Ives marked a new chapter in his design story. Here, Ives introduced a series of creative twists on everyday outfits throughout the show.
For example, a T-shirt and skirt combo was reimagined with sparkling mirror-work embroidery. And, a gown was decorated with floral patterns made out of safety pins.
One particularly daring piece was made from a shiny, upcycled material that Ives playfully described as “kinda yucky, but I love it.”
Sustainability was a key theme throughout the show.
Most of the outfits were crafted from materials that would otherwise be wasted. Many of these were made with military fabric leftovers. Another standout was a silk bubble dress crafted from a Qing Dynasty wall tapestry. According to Ives, this shows the “beauty in what has been discarded”.
