Weird pricing strategy by Audio-Technica, but it benefits the consumer

Audio-Technica debuts the ATH-TWX7, a new set of hi-res noise-canceling wireless earbuds at the CES 2024. Priced at $199, the ATH-TWX7 shares many features with the $299 ATH-TWX9, offering a $100 savings compared to their flagship counterpart.

“As we have grown to design critically acclaimed headphones, turntables and microphones, we have retained the belief that great audio should not be enjoyed only by the select few, but accessible to all.” Audio-Technica says in their press release.

What the ATH-TWX7 Have to Offer

The ATH-TWX7 boast several features in common with the pricier ATH-TWX9.

For one, these earbuds feature an ergonomic stem-based design and combine touch and physical controls, similar to the flagship model. These controls are highly customizable using the A-T Connect App.

The Connect app also provides access to extra features like low-latency mode, ambience control, EQ, and more. It’s available for both Android and iOS users.

The ATH-TWX7 earbuds also feature digital hybrid noise-canceling. This blocks unwanted noise, ensuring clear audio with a simple touch.

If you want awareness, you can select either the Transparency mode to hear all your surroundings or the talk-through function to focus on the voices for your conversations.

A soundscape feature is also available. This generates natural sounds, aiding in focus or relaxation.

Sames as the ATH-TWX9, the TWX7 also support Bluetooth Multipoint to allow you to connect to multiple devices simultaneously. And, they are IPX4 rated, so they’re able to handle light rain and sweat effectively without getting damaged.

The primary difference between the ATH-TWX7 and the ATH-TWX9 lies in their approach to delivering hi-res audio.

While they have similar 5.8mm high-resolution drivers, the TWX9 leverages Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Sound platform with the aptX Adaptive Bluetooth codec, while the TWX7 utilizes Sony’s LDAC codec.

Although both codecs can deliver up to 24-bit/96kHz resolution, LDAC has broader support in the Android ecosystem.

However, the ATH-TWX7 lacks certain extra features present in the TWX9. This includes wireless charging, a UV-based anti-bacterial system in the charging case, and support for Sony’s 360 Reality Audio.

Yet, the TWX7 offer slightly better battery life. The TWX7 have 6.5 hours of continuous playback and an additional 13.5 hours with the charger, totaling 20 hours. On the other hand, the TWX9 provides 6 hours of playback and 12.5 hours with the charger, summing only up to 18.5 hours.

Availability and Pricing

The ATH-TWX7 earbuds are available from January 9, 2024, priced at $199. They are available in three colors: Ash Black, Rich White, and an exclusive Stone Gray colorway available only from the Audio-Technica website.
