The leaks and timelines point to Apple slowing down its most popular earbuds.

Apple’s entry-level AirPods rarely change overnight, but they also never stay still for long. And with AirPods 4 now on the market, attention has turned to what the AirPods 5 might bring and when they could arrive.

Here’s a closer look at what’s being reported so far:

When Is the AirPods 5 Release Date?

Apple does not release AirPods on a fixed schedule, so any AirPods 5 date is an estimate. The best clue is the timing of previous entry-level launches:

  • AirPods 1: December 13, 2016
  • AirPods 2: March 20, 2019 (2 years, 3 months later)
  • AirPods 3: October 18, 2021 (2 years, 7 months later)
  • AirPods 4: September 20, 2024 (2 years, 11 months later)

Those gaps point to a refresh cycle of roughly two to three years for the entry-level line. If Apple follows the same pattern, a September 2026 launch is possible, with September 2027 also in play.

Apple typically keeps pre-order windows short. The AirPods 4 were available to pre-order for 11 days before release, so the AirPods 5 could follow a similar window.

How Much Will the Apple AirPods 5 Cost?

Apple usually keeps entry-level AirPods pricing steady from one generation to the next, so a similar two-tier setup would not be surprising. That’s why, even though pricing for the AirPods 5 has not been confirmed, they will likely stay close to the AirPods 4 lineup:

  • Base version: $129
  • Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) version: $179

What Will the AirPods 5 Look Like?

The AirPods 5 are likely to keep a design close to the AirPods 4. This current model uses an unsealed, open-ear shape that helps with situational awareness and weighs 4.3 grams per earbud.

One possible tweak is better support for users who struggle with the one-size-fits-all fit. Third-party makers already sell detachable AirPods hooks. So, Apple could respond with its own attachable ear hooks, either bundled in the box or sold as an official accessory.

What Features Can We Expect From the AirPods 5?

Most of what we know is based on early reports and Apple’s recent moves, but they point to a few likely upgrades for the AirPods 5.

H3 chip

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the H3 chip is expected to be the main hardware change. It should bring better sound processing, lower latency, and possibly on-device AI features.

Right now, tools like Live Translation rely on the iPhone, but an H3-powered pair of AirPods could handle more of those tasks on their own.

Recent software-based features

Several features already available on AirPods and AirPods Pro are likely to carry over to AirPods 5, including:

  • Head gestures: As with AirPods 4, you can nod or shake your head to answer “yes” or “no” to Siri prompts.
  • Auto sleep detection: The auto sleep function detects when you fall asleep and pauses playback to save battery life.
  • Camera trigger: Pressing the stem on the earbuds lets you take photos or start video recording. This way, you can snap a picture or begin filming without touching your iPhone.
  • Microphone enhancements: AirPods 5 may adopt the studio-quality microphone and acoustic changes from the Pro lineup, which should help with call clarity, Siri accuracy, and voice recordings.

Bluetooth LE Audio support

Bluetooth LE Audio was one of the features expected to land with AirPods 4, but it never showed up. That doesn’t mean it’s off the table, though. In fact, if it arrives at all, AirPods 5 would be a more natural place for Apple to introduce it without disrupting the Pro lineup.

With this, you can expect:

  • Better power efficiency compared to current Bluetooth audio.
  • More stable connections, especially in crowded wireless environments.
  • Expanded assistive listening support.
  • Potential for sharing audio with more than two pairs of AirPods from a single device.

AirPods case with a touch display

Before AirPods 4 launched, there was also talk of Apple rethinking the charging case itself. That idea traces back to a 2023 patent describing an AirPods case with a built-in touch display.

The concept is simple: turn the case into a lightweight control surface. Basic playback controls, audio mode switching, Apple TV interaction, or quick system commands could all live on the case, which reduces how often you need to pull out your phone.

Apple even explored gesture input and stylus interaction in the patent.

Nothing like this made it into AirPods 4, though, and Apple patents rarely guarantee products. Still, the filing shows Apple has at least considered giving the AirPods case a larger role than storage and charging, even if the idea remains on the shelf for now.

Brain-sensing and EEG-based health tracking

Some of the more unusual AirPods rumors come from Apple’s health research rather than product leaks. In late 2025, Apple researchers published a study on training AI models to analyze brain activity using ear-based EEG data, with applications such as sleep tracking and seizure detection.

The study is not tied to AirPods. However, Apple has also filed patents describing ear-worn devices that measure brain signals using electrodes placed in or around the ear. These filings outline ways to deal with inconsistent fit and signal quality using multiple sensors and software-based signal selection.

There is no indication that EEG sensors are really coming to AirPods 5. However, the overlap between Apple’s research and patents suggests long-term experimentation rather than an imminent consumer feature.

Premium tier features

The higher-end AirPods 5 could include a U2 chip in the case to improve Find My support, making it easier to track down misplaced earbuds.

This same chip was recently added to the AirPods Pro 3 case.

Apple is also rumored to be adding wireless charging for the case using Apple Watch chargers, Qi mats, or MagSafe. The current AirPods 4 case lacks this, while the AirPods 4 with ANC already support wireless charging.

Lastly, a built-in case speaker is another possible upgrade. That would let you ping the case through the Find My app, similar to the AirPods 4 ANC case, so it is easier to locate if you lose it around the house.
