Doritos and Smooth Technology’s new noise-canceling software blocks out crunching sounds for better gaming.
Doritos Silent, an AI-based noise-canceling software designed to mute the crunch of Doritos, is now available for download globally. This software aims to enhance the PC gaming experience by reducing snacking distractions picked up on the headset mic during calls on Zoom, Google Meet, Discord, and Microsoft Teams.
This technology was made in response to Splendid Comms’ survey highlighting a unique dilemma among gamers.
Overview
Behind the Technology of Doritos Silent
Developed in partnership with Smooth Technology, a creative engineering and design company, the AI program behind Doritos Silent took over six months to fine-tune. The team analyzed over 5,000 crunch sounds from 500 individuals, ensuring a comprehensive approach to sound detection and cancellation.
Not limited to Doritos, this technology can also be used to cancel out sounds from other crunchy snacks. The software is compatible with all applications using a microphone, such as Zoom, Google Meet, Discord, and Microsoft Teams. As such, it’s a versatile tool for various settings beyond gaming. Currently, however, Doritos Silent is only available for Windows PCs.
Mixed Reception for Doritos Silent
The introduction of Doritos Silent sparked varied responses. Some confusion emerged due to slightly misleading advertising. Some ads depicted a Doritos chip in an ear with the slogan “same crunch, no sound.” This led to misconceptions that Doritos Silent might be a new chip variant with a quieter bag rather than noise-canceling software.
Conversely, the product received positive feedback from individuals, particularly those with misophonia. This is a condition where certain sounds trigger negative emotional or physiological responses.
For them, Doritos Silent is a welcome innovation and highlights big corporations’ awareness of the annoyance caused by chewing sounds. Moreover, they say that companies could leverage the app’s AI technology into other devices like earpieces or implants.
It could also be tailored to cancel out other bothersome every day sounds like lawnmowers, leaf blowers, or traffic sounds.
