As if we need another platform to swipe through random videos.
Spotify’s ‘Tiktokification’ is up on a new level with the new TikTok-style interface that can change how users discover music and podcasts. This feature allows for vertical scrolling through song and podcast previews, mirroring the addictive user experience of TikTok and Instagram Reels.
The TikTok-Inspired Design: Features and User Interface
Spotify has unveiled a new update that introduces a TikTok-style scrolling feature, marking a significant evolution in the app’s interface.
This redesign is centered around an engaging, dynamic artwork and video feed. It allows users to effortlessly scroll through song and podcast previews in a manner reminiscent of the addictive TikTok experience. And, it aims to marry the visual appeal of social media platforms with Spotify’s extensive library of music and podcasts.
The update introduces a user-friendly, GIF-style icon, offering easy access to the new scrolling feed. You can find this prominently displayed at the top of artist pages, album pages, and all playlists.
Upon clicking it, users get an endless reel of condensed tracks, with audio and video snippets. This allows them to explore and discover content through a novel, visually engaging interface.
Video podcasts and tracks accompanied by visuals are also seamlessly integrated into the feed.
Spotify also added up to three hashtags in the song previews.
These hashtags represent the song’s genre and general vibe. Clicking a hashtag allows the user to jump between feeds and discover new music from mainstream categories like pop and rock to more niche genres like cinnamon.
You can also find these hashtags in the app’s Search tab.
Spotify’s Tiktokification Strategy
In March 2023, Spotify first announced the redesign during its “Stream On” event in Los Angeles. This was described by CEO Daniel Ek as the “biggest change since going mobile.”
This announcement laid the groundwork for what has now culminated in the app’s TikTok-style interface. The redesign focuses on a more dynamic home feed. It incorporates vertical scrolling with animated images, video clips, and audio previews akin to Netflix’s auto-playing trailers.
Gustav Söderström, Spotify’s Chief of Research and Development, highlighted the aim behind these changes. He emphasized a departure from the traditional static browsing experience.
“Our goal is not to steal time,” he explained, pointing to the potentially addictive nature of social media feeds.
Instead, Söderström claims Spotify’s approach is different. He said the redesigned interface is crafted to “speed up discovery”, beyond anything else. This aims to allow users to quickly save music, podcasts, and audiobooks for later enjoyment or immediate listening.
I actually don’t mind this feature! It’s a great way to quickly discover new music or flick through playlists!
