Founded in 1938, STAX has led the way in electrostatic headphone technology with its famous “Earspeaker” designs. It began with the world’s first electrostatic headphones, the SR-1 model, in 1960. Since then, STAX consistently produced professional and audiophile-grade models celebrated for their accurate sound reproduction.
However, the high cost has generally kept this premium listening experience within reach of only a few enthusiasts.
This is changing with STAX’s latest release—the SRS-X1000 Electrostatic Earspeaker System. This system is their most affordable option yet and aims to make electrostatic audio more widely available.
What Is the STAX SRS-X1000 Electrostatic Earspeaker System?
The SRS-X1000 bridges STAX’s heritage with modern innovation as the successor to their long-standing SRS-3100 system.
Priced to attract both new and experienced audiophiles, this introduces high-quality electrostatic sound technology, which has often been seen as a luxury, to a broader audience.
This system pairs the new SR-X1 earspeakers with the SRM-270S Driver Unit, setting a fresh benchmark for entry-level electrostatic systems. This combination promises to deliver STAX’s hallmark sound purity and transparency at a lower cost.
STAX SR-X1 Earspeaker Features
The SR-X1 earspeakers employ a push-pull electrostatic circular design with a rear-opening enclosure. They boast an expansive 7Hz to 41,000Hz frequency range and under 0.01% distortion, reproducing every detail faithfully.
The construction of the SR-X1 also reduces resonances significantly.
Its sound unit is directly mounted inside the enclosure to minimize joints between parts for a clear and accurately shaped sound. And, the curved profile of the back slit structure allows sound waves to pass naturally, reducing distortion.
A new arc assembly with rigid metal materials also enhances the structural integrity, while the adjustable slide-type headband optimizes fit. This is boosted
with the plush sheepskin and artificial leather earpads for long-wearing comfort.
Another key improvement in the SR-X1 Earspeakers is the new cable design. This features a low-capacitance OFC wide parallel 6-core cable, about 2.5 meters long, engineered to reduce interference and preserve signal purity.
But that’s not all. This cable design also reduces the number of connections and smooths out the curves on the back.
Under the hood, the SR-X1 earspeakers run at 580V DC bias voltage, with 110pF capacitance, including the cable.
STAX SRM-270S Driver Unit Features
Powering the SR-X1 is the SRM-270S Driver Unit, optimized for electrostatic transducers. It has a DC to 35,000Hz frequency response, under 0.01% harmonic distortion at 1kHz for clean, transparent sound, and an input impedance of 25kΩ.
The unit features a low-noise FET amp stage paired with an emitter follower output circuit for exceptional signal clarity. With 58dB of amplification, it delivers up to 280V RMS at 1kHz, driving the SR-X1 effectively.
Build quality is also a focus.
The SRM-270S is built with a strong front panel made of 3mm-thick aluminum and a larger aluminum case. This design helps it stay cool, making it reliable and long-lasting.
It also includes an AC adapter. And, it offers excellent connectivity options with high-quality RCA pin jacks and output terminals.
