Isolation without the boxy sound? Count me in.

Sennheiser has pushed the boundaries once again with their latest high-end offering, the HD 620S closed-back headphones.

These headphones are designed to destroy the limitations we’ve come to expect from sealed cans.

How, you ask? By fusing the HD 600 series’ renowned natural, airy sound signature with an immersive, speaker-like presentation. This results in a private listening experience like no other.

According to Sennheiser, the new HD 620S directly tackle the shortcomings of traditional closed-back models.

“The hi-fi community has clamored for a headphone with the best traits from our 600 series. Not only does the HD 620S deliver on that promise. Its immersive imaging and brilliant impulse response make it an exceptional listening experience for every situation where a higher level of performance matters.” said Product Manager Jermo Koehnke.

By merging the isolation of closed designs with the expansiveness of open-back headphones, the HD 620S aim to give you the best of both worlds.

Here’s how they do it:

  • Advanced Transducer Design: The headphones feature custom-tuned 42 mm dynamic transducers for detailed, natural sound. These reproduce detailed, natural sound akin to open designs while maintaining isolation.
  • High-Performance Acoustics: The 150-ohm aluminum voice coil optimizes damping for fast transients and clear instrument separation. Clarity and precision? Checked.
  • Premium Build Quality: The iconic chassis of the HD 620S has steel-reinforced headband sliders and ear cup housings. Plus, the ear pads are made from artificial leather with internal venting for extended durability and comfort.
  • Optimized Acoustics: The steel plate at the back of the ear cups serves as an efficient sound isolator. It also manages internal reflections, improving sound clarity and purity.
  • Immersive Soundstage and Imaging: An angled baffle promotes air movement like open-backs. This design creates triangular imaging akin to a loudspeaker setup in an expertly tuned room. It places the listener directly in the middle of the soundstage so you’ll feel like you’re in the sweet spot.
  • Flexible Connectivity: A twist-and-lock single-sided cable design allows for aftermarket cable options, including varied lengths and in-line mics. Standard 3.5mm and 6.3mm options are also included as well as a 4.4mm balanced cable.

Taking cues from Sennheiser’s open-back HD 600 line, the closed HD 620S serve up a similar sound signature with a fresh twist.

The HD 600 are praised for slightly more transparent, articulate mids, but the 620S counter with a naturalistic, balanced tonal character true to the family sound.

In the low end, the 620S have a punchy, controlled bass akin to the HD 600. Yet, the HD 620S offer louder and more impactful bass compared to the HD 600, as illustrated by their higher frequency response curve from 20 to 100 Hz.

But where the 620S diverge most from their open-back siblings is in the treble response.

The 620S’ treble promise to strike a balance. They are said to be more forward and crisp than the HD 600’s smooth highs, yet more relaxed and refined than the lively 660S2’s upper registers.

Despite these tonal variations, the HD 620S remain rooted in the HD 600 series house sound. They aim to deliver that balanced, unfatiguing reference tonality audiophiles and studio pros love.

In build and ergonomics though, the HD 620S forge their own modern path. Their sleek, portable design departs from the shared classic look of the open HD 600 and HD 660S2. Basically, the 620S targets those looking for life beyond the studio.
