Plus, the return of offline listening.
Roon Labs has officially released Roon 2.0.28, marking a significant update for its user base. This comes with the integration of TIDAL Max, TIDAL’s premier high-quality streaming tier, and the reinstation of offline functionality.
The update is a direct response to the audiophile community’s demand for higher-quality streaming options.
Roon and TIDAL Max Integration
TIDAL introduced its Max quality tier in the summer of 2023, offering up to 24bit/192 kHz high-quality FLAC streaming.
Before that, listeners had to choose between CD-quality, which streams at 16bit/44.1kHz, and MQA. TIDAL Max exceeds these formats by streaming music at higher sample rates and bit depths, typically ranging from 48kHz to 192kHz at 24bit. It provides an audio experience that closely replicates the original studio recording quality.
However, users haven’t been able to play tracks of this quality using third-party apps until now.
Roon has worked meticulously with TIDAL to ensure that the integration offers a seamless experience. It aims to mirror the high-quality content available on TIDAL’s native applications.
This means that TIDAL HiFi Plus tier subscribers can now enjoy the same high-resolution audio content through Roon, enhancing their listening experience with the additional features that Roon provides.
A crucial aspect of this integration is the attention to detail in maintaining parity with TIDAL’s treatment of Max quality content. Roon ensures that the streaming format consistency is preserved, providing users with a unified experience across both platforms.
Restoring Offline Functionality in Roon
In response to user feedback, Roon Labs has reinstated offline functionality in the latest update.
This change reverts to the functionality found in Roon 1.8 and earlier versions. It allows users to enjoy music without an internet connection.
This caters to those with intermittent internet access or who prefer to manage their music libraries offline.
Other Technical Enhancements in Roon 2.0.28
Roon 2.0.28 also includes several technical enhancements and minor improvements.
However, Roon didn’t disclose all of them, except for one. This is a fix that addresses an issue where the volume could unintentionally reach 100%.
