YouTuber DMS is releasing the Omega Headphones this April. The headphones, which he revealed during an interview at CanJam 2023, are his first venture into audio gear design.

According to DMS, they’re a “love letter to audio” and blend a unique design with his passion for sound quality.

“This is a headphone that I designed based on all the things I wish a headphone had, but that still doesn’t mean everyone will like it (and that’s okay).” he says.

According to DMS, the Omega Headphones are inspired by his love for audio and the desire to craft a listening device that meets his exacting standards. As such, he focused mainly on sound quality, durability, and comfort.

The headphones are made using nylon powder and selective laser sintering (SLS). So, they weigh just 300 grams, ensuring comfort over long listening periods. It’s a departure from traditional heavy materials, which was something DMS was initially concerned about.

“I just want something light that I can wear all the time. So, part of me was like, “I wonder if people will think it’s too light.” But so far, it’s been a really positive reception. I’m really happy about that,” DMS said.

The Omega headphones feature cables by Periapt and ear pads from Dekoni. This collaborative effort aims to optimize every aspect of the Omega for quality.

Design-wise, the headphones have unique vent patterns and a laser-cut stainless steel baffle allows for clear visibility of the drivers, showing the no-compromise approach to sound fidelity. According to DMS, these elements are crucial for achieving a natural and expansive soundstage that aligns with his preferences.

“I’ve been using the [Sennheiser HD] 650 for basically forever. It was always like my daily, and all I ever wanted was a bit more bass extension, a bit more soundstage, maybe a little bit more treble extension too, and a lot of that is what I landed on here,” DMS explains.

Modularity is another key feature of the Omega Headphones.

Users can easily take apart and replace components like ear pads, cables, and drivers. For example, the headphones have holes that let users choose between angled or straight connectors, emphasizing the headphones’ serviceability.

DMS shares that the headphones’ name and its red design element is a nod to a fun childhood memory.

“So the red (and name) is kinda a nod to an old gameboy-advance game boss in megaman-zero called “omega” who kicked my ass as a kid. That said I was considering doing an all-black version also,” DMS noted on Reddit.

As the Omega headphones haven’t officially been released for sale, detailed specs are scarce. What we know comes from DMS’s interviews, providing a glimpse into their design, materials, and collaborations. Further details will likely emerge closer to the launch.

The DMS Project Omega Headphones are available exclusively on Headphones.com from April 12, 2024 for the launch price of US$999.

Also, after the production period, DMS says he will open-source the Omega design. This will allow the audiophile community to explore, modify, and potentially enhance the design.

“It’s pretty hard to make at home, but anyone can do whatever they wish with the design. You’ll need an SLS machine, C02 laser, CNC, and lathe for several components if you plan to make it at home. My hope is that after 1 year I’ll learn a lot from this project,” DMS said.
